Signs and Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Colon Cancer also known as Corectal cancer has many signs and symptoms and its causes are diverse. Colon Cancer is a malignant tumor that grows from the inner wall of the large intestine.



What are the symptoms of colon cancer?

Recognizing the signs and symptoms is not very easy because most are generic but once one notes these signs and symptoms, one needs to check with the doctor for clarity. Many may not be due to colon cancer. Other sicknesses may cause the same colon cancer signs and symptoms.

As mentioned, should you have these signs and symptoms, it’s advisable for you to see a doctor for proper diagnosis and quick treatment.

According to the ACS, Mednet and NCI, common signs and symptoms of colon cancer may include:-

  • A change in bowel habits, such as having stools that are narrower than usual.
  • Blood (either bright red or very dark) in the stool or Blood in or on your stool (bowel movement). This may come along with diarrhea, constipation, or a feeling that the bowel does not empty completely or at times narrow stools,
  • You may note a change in your bowel habits,
  • Constant tiredness and a feeling of fatigue, or weakness or shortness of breath,
  • Cramps, or bloating.
  • A general abdominal discomfort (This could include frequent gas pains, bloating, fullness, and/or cramps)
  • Losing weight and you don’t know why
  • Pain, aches, or cramps in your stomach that happen a lot and you don’t know why.
  • Vomiting

Again, if you have any of these symptoms, it’s advisable to talk to your doctor. These symptoms may also be caused by some other sickness or something other than colon cancer.

Other vital things to know about Colon Cancer (According to the National Cancer Institute)
  • Most colorectal cancers develop from polyps. Removal of colon polyps (An abnormal growth of tissue in the lining of the bowel) can prevent colorectal cancer.
  • Colon polyps and early cancer can have no symptoms. Therefore regular screening is important.
  • Surgery is the most common treatment for colorectal cancer.
  • Diets high in fat are believed to predispose humans to colon cancer.
